Times were when being 'sent to Coventry' was the ultimate insult, but that hasn't been the case for former Hurricanes and Blues five-eighths Jimmy Gopperth.
The 36-year-old, he's 37 next month, has just signed for a sixth season with Wasps.
Gopperth has been playing in the Premiership since 2009, having signed for Newcastle to leave New Zealand. He also had a two-year stint with Leinster in the Pro-14.
From his Taranaki roots, he made his way in New Zealand through Wellington to the Hurricanes for four seasons before having one year with the Blues.
He quickly made an impact with Newcastle, especially with the accuracy of his goal-kicking and he was twice the leading individual scorer in the Premiership. While the side was relegated in 2011-12, they regained the Premiership before he moved to have two seasons with Leinster. He then signed for Wasps for the 2015-16 season.
Wasps have been battling a bit of late, although they were fifth in the Premiership before the Covid-19-enforced shutdown of the competition. Dai Young had departed as director of rugby and Lee Blackett had taken his place.
Gopperth, who missed much of the 2018-19 season due to a knee injury, had been leading the way in the side's improvements.
"It's an incredibly exciting time to be involved with Wasps," Gopperth said.
"The last five years have been so enjoyable and I feel this team is building towards being really successful – I want to be part of that. I feel I've got a lot more to give."
Gopperth is sitting on 96 appearances for the club and has shown his versatility by also playing at second five-eighths when Danny Cipriani played the 2016-17 season for the club. He also has a game at fullback on his resumé.
His individual points haul of 1351 points is eighth on the Premiership scoring list, 819 of those points being for Wasps.
Blackett welcomed that intent and said Gopperth, despite being of an age where most players have retired, had been producing outstanding performances consistently throughout the season.
"He is showing no signs of being to finish any time soon.
"He is one of the most positive guys you will ever meet. His enthusiasm is infectious," Blackett said.
